You could spend the next 10 weekends out every Saturday and Sunday hunting dawn to dusk and only get one or two of them. I am a long time Alaskan hunter and very sucessful trapper. The best way to hunt a coyote is to trap them. They have killed all my rabbits andįor every coyote you see in the day - expect to find 8 or 9 around the same area at night. They have killed my cat and are getting unafraid and it is time now to do something about them. I can't hunt after dark, it is against the law. Coyotes love to run fast at night with their nose down in favorite trails - find a popular trail and you can clean up. Find a choke point and insert a snare just three inches off the ground. Smart sets are when you discover where they are running at night. If the leg hold gets one great - but - if it just scares them they will the exit snares hard and this is what will catch them for you. With luck - one coyote will hit a snare on the way in. The idea is the coyotes will siff the chicken out - and eat the loose one you left out.they will love the ones the found so much they will fight to find all the rest - works especially good when a few coyotes come on scene. Before you leave - toss tiny pieces of chicken around the trap site and a little bit away. About two feet from the trap place a pair of snares on each entrace or exit from the trap. Don't laugh - but old southern fried chicken works great to bring in Coyotes! Secure a leg hold trap to small tree and dig a lollypop shaped hole for it to set in - rub the chicken all over the leg trap - then stomp some in the hole and place the trap on top.
Trapping is a mixture of smart snare sets, dumb sets, and bait sets.

Remove the snares/traps one at a time, let air dry a few minutes to cool down and insert one each in a zip bag and close it. While this is boiling open up two dozen zip lock freezer bags using rubber gloves and add some unboiled grass and greens from the trap area to each bag. Take the big kettle and fill it with grass, bark and especially green from any everygreen trees in the area - add snares - cover with water and bring to a rolling boil for a good 45+ minutes.
Along with your 2 dozen snares you will want at least 6 #2 leg traps. Below is a link to Funke - buy what you can't find from them. All you need is 24+ fox/coyote snares, an outdoor gas grill, big kettle to boil in, some local grass and twigs from the area you plan to trap in and zip lock bags.
